Further info about Exercise ELF-1
Requested by the Saudi government following the outbreak of the Iran-Iraq War, its primary mission was to augment Royal Saudi Air Force (RSAF) radar coverage and protect neutral airspace in the region.
Over its 8.5-year span, the ELF-1 contingent flew more than 6,000 sorties and 87,000 flight hours.
Crews and support personnel (primarily from Tinker Air Force Base's 552nd Airborne Warning and Control Wing) deployed on 30- to 90-day temporary duty (TDY) assignments, maintaining at least one E-3 in the air constantly.
The continuous deployment formally ended in April 1989 as the U.S. determined the RSAF was fully capable of operating its own newly acquired fleet of E-3 aircraft.
